He writes about receiving letters from friends at home. George also writes about two of their vessels chasing a blockade runner ashore last Tuesday a week ago and setting fire to her. The next fair day, Saturday, they tried to capture a blockade supply runner and a long range gun called whistleing [sic] Tom. The 'rebels' abandoned the steamer and supplies, which were captured by Union sailors. George mentions there being so much cloth and blankets on board from capturing the steamer that their "ship was turned into a clothing store." He also writes about chasing the Giraffe blockade runner but not being able to catch her. He mentions the Iroquois chasing another steamer called the Banshee which was not caught but threw most of its cargo overboard to escape. George writes that they heard that Fort Sumter had fallen with help from Navy ships Wabash and Pohattan [sic]. He also writes about where they might go next, that he expects to be in Boston to be discharged by November 1st, and about fishing. George recounts a large storm they met in the gulf stream on the 27th that they barely survived. He writes that after they survived they chased a steamer but she outran them. He also mentions that they have to watch their bread, or hard tack, "to keep it from walking away, as there is animals inside of it."MS0673/01-01.08#01

Civil War, 1861-1865Hampton Roads, Battle of, Va., 1862.This series consists of thirty-four letters written by George Malcolm Newton to different family members while he fought in the Civil War in the Union Navy aboard the US steam frigate Minnesota. They describe his daily life and most letters contain accounts of his days transferred from his log book. The letters also contain information about battles and ship movement, including a letter of his eye-witness account of the Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862. In this letter he mentions his ship getting stuck during the battle and being helped by other Union ships including the ironclad Monitor. His letters usually contain answers to his family’s questions such as what he eats and who he knows on board, and he also asks questions about how his family is doing and how various friends and family back home in Grafton, Massachusetts are doing.MS0673/01
